Once the personal hunting ground of Maharajas of Alwar, Sariska is the other Tiger land in Rajasthan. It was established as a sanctuary in 1958 and in 1979 was taken up under Project Tiger. Safari is an adventurous experience which takes the traveler to the unexplored areas of a desert or forest.
Nearest to Delhi (190 km) and Jaipur (120 km) and about 35 km from Alwar, Sariska Tiger Reserve covers an about 800 sq. km. (with a core area of 480 sq. km.) dominated by scrubby Aravali Hills, the sanctuary sprawls with dry thorny deciduous forests, covered almost ninety per cent by the Dhok tree.
Safaris are organized by forest office located at the entrance of the park. The best way to see the animals s driving through the park on 4 wheel jeeps early morning or in the late evening. Sariska is open to visitors throughout the year, although certain jungle tracks are closed during the monsoon and the breeding season. The best time to visit the park is late in the winter around November to March. If you don’t mind the heat, April to June is a great time to see animals at the waterholes. The Tiger population in this park is estimated to be around 30. The other residents of the park are leopard, jungle cat, jackal, hyna, sloth bear in addition to large number of deer species – sambhar, cheetal. Neelgai as well as common langur that inhabit the tree cover. Like all parks, the reserve is also rich in birds including the grey patridge, white breasted kingfisher, quail, snake eagle and golden backed wood pecker.
There is also an ancient fort – Kankawari fort on a sharp hill top where emperor Aurangzeb is believed to have imprisoned his brother Dara Shikohn, the rightful heir to the Mughal throne. The ruins of 9th – 11th century temples of Garh Rajor remind the past glory of the area. The closest town of Alwar is connected with both Delhi and Jaipur by a regular rail and bus service. The choice within and around the park is limkited to a up-market palace, Hotel Sariska Palace RTDC units at Siliserh (Lake Palace) and other near park gate at Sariska (Tiger Den).
