Descendant of the famed Prithviraj Chauhan, Ramdev, a Rajput of the Tomar Clan, was born in 1458. He grew to be an invincible hero, devoting his entire life to the poor and the backward castes. Muslims also revere him calling him Ram Shah Pir. He is worshipped by Hindus of all castes, especially Megwals and the Banjara tribes.
A massive red sand stone gateway with a suspended bell for pilgrims to sound, stands at the approach. There are several small chhatris with carvings of heros on horseback and many toy horses. Musicians play enthusiastically on enormous drums inside the covered pavilion. The wooden door guarding the main shrine is exquisitely carved depicting Baba Ramdev with typical Rajput curled beared and Moustache. The main shrine houses a dark room with a platform on which life size model horses, including one sliver rests. There are three small graves of the original head priest, his eldest son and adopted daughter. Before these stands a sliver bust a Baba wearing a crowm with pink silk cloth around the neck and garland of jasmine and marigolds.
As a true Rajput, Ramdev was greatly attached to horses and together they must have covered immense distances, rendering help to distress souls and overcoming many enemies. Annual fair here attracts hundred thousands of devotees.
Ramdev Temple is 13 Kms from Pokaran between Jodhpur and Jaisalmer.
