The Govind Devji Temple, the temple of Lord Krishna, in whose name Kachhawaha’s kings of Jaipur used to rule. The image of Govind Deva, the most sacred of the sinx forms of the eight incarnation of Lord Vishnu – Krishna was sculpted by Vajranath, an unrivalled sculptor of the time and the great grandson of Krishna himself. The idol brought from the birthplace of Lord Krishna, Mathura, was consecrated as in the City Palace Complex by Raja Sawai Jai Singh II in 1730’s.
The Temple is simple with an open columned pavilion and a tiered courtyard enclosed by a low marble balustrade. Mounted on a sliver throne, the deity is shown with the typical dark blue countenance of Lord Krishna, playing a flute and ornamented with heavy crown and jewelry Radha – his consort sits beside him. It is concealed behind curtains. The daily viewing is an ecstatic occasion with crowds staring in silence at the sacred image, then raise their arms and in a great collective sigh, call out the prayer. As curtains fall the priests serve small Prasad to devotees, that they are blessed. The ceremony take place 5-7 times daily at appointed Hours. Krishna’s Birth anniversary Janmastami is the occasion which is celebrated every year at the temple, situated within the City Palace complex near Jaleb Chowk in Jaipur.
